The orchid meadow

The Hohenauer Ochsenhalt lies at the foot of the Sommeralm and belongs to the 8 Hohenauerfarmers who graze their cattle here. A wide variety of orchids grow on this 30-hectare pasture. To preserve this treasure, the eight mountain farmers have to comply with strict rules. Chemical fertiliser is not permitted and only a certain number of animals may graze on the acreage. Trees that start to grow in this area from wind-borne seed also have to be cut down to maintain the proper lighting and ground conditions for the orchids.
With its diversity, special character and beauty, the Hohenauer Ochsenhalt is one of the Almenland Naturpark’s jewels.
