Stift Vorau, the sole remaining monastery of canons in Styria, rests on a broad hill between the Wechsel massif with its foothills in the north and the Masenberg in the south.
The monastery church was built in 1660-1662 and redesigned in the style of the Viennese Late Baroque starting in the year 1700. It therefore represents a Baroque total work of art with opulent frescoes, grand altars and beautiful statues of saints. Special gems include the pulpit and high altar, built to perfection down to the smallest detail with magnificent decorations.
Not just the monastery church but also the library attracts visitors. It holds around 17,500 volumes. Yet the monastery’s collection includes even more (around 40,000 volumes). The walls are decorated with wonderful paintings and sculptures. Another artistic pearl of the monastery is the vestry.
The church, house chapel and courtyards can be viewed freely during the day, the library and vestry only during one of the regular tours.
